... Odd. This book, the third in the Junna Linna series of novels, is brilliantly plotted. The characters are unique and utterly compelling. The story is, unto itself, fascinating. Junna himself is a masterful creation. This book, unlike the second book in the series, is tightly focused, the events are laid out perfectly, plausibly, which is important because there are so many twists and turns, numerous unexpected revelations. Yet every turn feels right. Inevitable. We have no way of knowing when we’ll suddenly accelerate, stop, slowdown, turn a hard left or run into a tree. But we completely trust the person(s) at the wheel; the writers. I say that this book is “odd” because it leaves out scenes that a more typical, mundane and formulaic book would include. People being desperately united, a trial’s verdict, a tearful reunion. No, this book is completely “as seen” from the Junna Linna’s perspective, a suspended police detective, a shining, almost casual genius who follows only his own rules. His own impulses. His powers of deduction are remarkable and completely plausible, yet there is an obsessive passion within him that pushes him forward, against all odds. Driving him, inescapably, toward what sees more clearly than anyone else, JUSTICE. It’s as if all killers/killings are related, are of a family, are a cult, a terrorist cell, meaning no one is SAFE. He LIVES his cases because he has sacrificed everything; family, friends, career, love itself, in order to protect everyone else, particularly those he loves, those that fall into his path, those who are vulnerable. Everyone. His cases, really, are all one case. “Humanities Darkest Impulses Escaped”. The darkness, the cold, black emptiness these soulless kidnappers hide. Hiding, perhaps, in all of us. Always trying always to escape, “get past us”, relentlessly pushing against “the sacred door” which, separates us from the horror inside. And, while it remains closed, allows humanity to live. To grow, to learn, to love and to breathe. It is only when this door holds back the beasts, that any kind of “life” can exist. But, far too often, the door is pushed open just enough for a monster, a vile, empty vulgarity, to escape into our lives. These beasts, believing that the lives of others are, at most, obstacles, are in the way, so it “moves them aside”, subjecting them to the only verifiable “gone”; death. Our lives have value only when they supply the beast with what it wants. Shelter, sustenance, a name and a place where, disguised as it’s victims, can live another day. But, it has pushed it’s way into our world for a PURPOSE. To satisfy it’s singular need. For an arrow there must be a target. One that became was made during a childhood trauma. Or, later in life, when it’s innate capability for sociopathy, and it’s perhaps sudden and warped realization that it’s own survival is the only necessary one, makes of the rest of us, or those of us that fit a particular, unfortunate “type”, appear to be either the deliverer of the beast’s own destruction or the very definition of it’s purpose. OR, as some believe, the beast was born bestial. With the hate, vengeance and passion necessary to see as sustenance, the taking of other lives. That killing as survival is already there, in it’s mother’s womb, a much it’s biology as sight and hearing, alight in it’s brain, it’s synapses, it’s neurons. Every serial killer is, of course, unique. And here, in these books, they are uniquely drawn. But, the level of detection necessary to identify the beasts, who wear as a disguise a “normal human being”, is a detection capability as rare the beast itself. It’s detector must ultimately be equal in passion. As full of love as the beast is of hate. As demanding of justice as the beast is of vengeance. As pure and driven as the beast is warped and compulsive. There must ALSO be an incident in the detective’s past that makes him so aware of the beast, and believing that we are all in perpetual danger. And, that, unless HE ALONE fights back, we will all, one by one, disappear. Be eliminated. Taken from HIM. Because, he has taken on, AS his life, the continuation of everyone else’s. Thus, in tragic ways, HE is the ultimate victim of the murderers he investigates. Every case is deeply personal and intimate. It is HIS responsibility to from evil. He has no life so that others may live. And, he, Junna Linna FASCINATES. The Fire Witness The Joona Linna Series Lars Kepler 9780771095689 Books Reviews
I was concerned Lars Kepler may go off the boil in this third outing of Joona Linna - boy, was I wrong!
I've never experienced such unease at the end of a book - The feeling is Jurek Walter may be far beyond any character I've ever come across before - outstanding - the girl with the dragon tattoo has nothing on this series - probably the most audacious ending I've ever come across. Completely unexpected. I do believe one must read all three books to fully understand Joona Linna's character, and thereby feel the full effect of these final chapters. I wonder if Lars Kepler have discovered the future of detective fiction! Astonishing.
This was an excellent mystery book!! Very well written!!!! I didn't want to put it down! It kept me wondering until the very end who the murderer was! Read It!!!
The Fire Witness is the third novel in series starring Swedish super detective Joona Linna. As with their other books, violent acts are unsparingly described. These scenes cannot be skipped because every detail comes back to figure in resolution of mystery. The plots are linked in unpredictable ways which is what drives the reader to keep going-skipping meals & missing bedtimes. The whole story is very cinematic you see the action vividly in your mind. Children are primary targets of violence, so parents may react strongly to those elements.
I bought this because I'd read The,Hypnotist and couldn't put it down. Not so with this one - which I couldn't WAIT to put down. I slogged through it - but it was an effort. Maybe I've read too many of these - the brooding but brilliant Detective goes against all the rules to save the day -yada yada......I figured out who the killer was before the book was even half finished - just hung in there in case I was wrong, (since it was so easy to guess), but I wasn't. I found the writing stilted & clumsy at times - maybe due to the translation- whatever- I'm disappointed.
In addition to a plot filled with suspense and twists, turns and subplots, this work goes deep into the psyche of its numerous characters and sheds light on problems of of madness, mental disorder, guilt, responsibility, treatment of children, crime, punishment and justice. The work is skillfully written moving from scene to scene, dialogue to dialogue making the story come alive and real for the reader. The intelligence, integrity, sensitivity, and stubborn determination of Inspector Joona Linna make for an unforgettable character.
Although there are some graphic descriptions of violence, cruelty, and forced sex showing darker aspects of human behavior, these are woven into a larger narrative. This is one of the best works of Scandinavian crime fiction that I have read so far.
Fair warning I started reading Lars Kepler in Canada where the Costco store had a big stack of at least four of what I believe is a five book series. I bought the first one there, bought the second in paperback and the third, Fire Witness, on and was avid to get on to volume 4, Sandman. Guess what - volumes 4 and 5 are not available on . You can order them from England, but no free shipping and the edition comes with VAT. Frustrating but that maybe shows that I really enjoyed Fire Witness and I want some more. Maybe is listening and will help us out.
